My work explores the human figure as a space whereidentity, desire, vulnerability and social expectation intersect. I aminterested in what is revealed through the face and the body, but also in whatremains concealed beneath the surface.
Portraiture allows me to examine the tension betweenappearance and interiority. Using acrylic paint, dramatic contrasts of lightand shadow, and carefully controlled colour, I create figures that emerge fromdarkness into a concentrated field of light. Chiaroscuro becomes more than aformal device, it allows me to isolate the subject, strip away distractions andcreate an intimate encounter between the figure and the viewer.
The gaze plays a central role in my work. My subjects donot simply allow themselves to be observed. They look back. Through thatexchange, I seek to create a sense of presence that is direct, vulnerable andsometimes confrontational. I am drawn to the moment when an image moves beyondphysical resemblance and begins to reveal something more elusive, a tension, anemotion, a contradiction, or a fragment of an inner life.
In my recent work, I have become increasingly interestedin contemporary femininity and in the complex relationship between beauty, desire, consumption and self-image. Fashion, popular culture and the visuallanguage of advertising shape the way we understand ourselves and others. Iappropriate elements of these languages while questioning the expectations theyimpose, particularly the pressure to perform, consume and conform.
The women who inhabit these paintings exist within thesetensions while resisting simple definitions. They can be confident and fragile, seductive and detached, powerful and deeply sensitive. Rather than presentingfemininity as a fixed identity, I am interested in its contradictions and inthe emotional complexity that exists beneath constructed appearances.
After stepping away from painting for several years tofocus on my musical practice, returning to the studio transformed the way Iapproached the work. My series HIGHLY SENSITIVE emerged from this return andfrom a renewed attention to perception, emotional intensity and vulnerability.Sensitivity, for me, is not a weakness. It is a way of experiencing the worldwith heightened awareness.
Ultimately, I paint people in search of what remains when the surface isstripped away. Beneath image, fashion, identity and expectation, I am lookingfor something instinctive and profoundly human.
